11.3.2 Instrumental Orchestration

The presence and the use of artifacts in a classroom requires specific actions by the teacher. They correspond to the choice of the artifacts and to the construction of tasks, according to the Theory of Semiotic Mediation . The teacher should also take into account students’ instrumental geneses. She/he should manage the different artifacts during the lessons, deciding, for instance, when the students can use an artifact or another one, or which artifact is available at a certain moment. Trouche (2004) has proposed the notion of instrumental orchestration , defined by:(1)Didactical configurations, as arrangements of artifacts in the environment;
